E2 Progress

I have moved the Locomotive page section for the E2 into its own sub-page here to account for the slightly more in-depth process of readying it for BT.

The woes of DCC control and fitting are covered in that page and in this blog entry. I have moved on to the body-shell painting and detailing.

The first job was to clean off the weathering with a mixture of white spirit, soap and water, and remove the BR transfers with a fibreglass brush. I then used some T-cut to even out the finish before coating the sections due to be glossy black with Johnson’s Klear, a self-levelling floor polish which does stellar duty as a semi-gloss varnish.

Southern Style Vol. 2 suggests the entire locomotives should be in glossy black, save for the tender tops (orange), roof (white) and bufferbeam/housings (vermillion). Given that No. 103 is meant to be the newest locomotive on the layout, it was an opportunity for a reasonably high gloss finish.

The inside of the cab should be a light brown stone colour, but I couldn’t find a way to disassemble the loco, so it remains in shadow. The roof was given a few thin coats of Vallejo Wolf Grey (a cold off-white) and the buffer-beams and housings Vallejo Vermillion. A few areas of the smokebox needed touching up, so that was done with Vallejo Black and Heavy Charcoal mixed to match the existing paint.

Transfers are from IanMacCormac / E.B. Models for the lettering and (will be) from Railtec Transfers.
