45′ Bogie Coach in 1 Gauge – Part 1

At one point I’d bought quite a few of the Accucraft Mk1 coaches, which are certainly impressive beasts – but transition-era modelling isn’t really my cup of tea at the end of the day – so it was always a purchase fraught with tension. I decided to move them on.

After getting into 3D printing and mixed-media construction, I thought there was always an opportunity to build a rake of pre-group coaches that were more aligned to my period of interest.

I built some 4 wheeled carriages and used the interiors from a GNR 4w set on G1-3D. I thought it would be interesting to try to build-up a bogie coach with the files sliced in interesting ways, and ended up with this prototype:

When I shared this, it game to light that bogie coaches were already in the offing, so I deferred my own efforts and instead made use of the new designs that were to become shortly available by Mr. P. Davis.

I downloaded the files and followed the instructions on G1-3D and built up the carriage exactly as directed – this is a view in primer:

A technique to create a (theoretically) teak effect is to paint a yellow-orange basecoat, varied with a little orange and/or brown:

The next step for this is to mix up Burnt Umber/Van Dyke brown and liquin and paint each panel:

The amount of time required for oils to dry is measured in weeks, if not months – particularly when liquin is added – so this is now a shelf queen for some time. In the meantime, I will sort the roof, find some passengers, build the windows and knock out another couple of coaches to create a short rake.
