Locomotives

I am fortunate that the Marsh period of the LB&SCR has a few ready to run items, and in order to the layout operational as soon as possible, I have availed myself of them where possible:

A1 No. 82 “Boxhill

Boxhill has a chequered career, and the RTR model depicts No. 82 in pre-1905 guise, after which it was converted to a distinctive 2-4-0T arrangement and shedded at Brighton for branch services to Kemp Town and Devil’s Dyke.

Though no photographic evidence exists, it should almost certainly be in Umber by 1911, but I am happy to excuse this minor temporal anomaly as long as umber A1’s are so hard to find. If that were come to pass, it would probably make sense to depict the other of the converted pair No. 81 ex-“Beulah“.

A1 No. 647 Ex-“Shadwell

Shadwell retained its A1 configuration until the end of WW1, so is an easy way to have an appropriate umber terrier for my Brighton layout than the RTR No. 643.

A1 No. 638 “Locomotive Department” ex-“Millwall

Millwall was relegated to a pumping engine at Three Bridges by 1901, but was towed to Brighton Works to emerge in LBSC lined black livery as “Locomotive Department”

E1 No. 127 “Poitiers

No. 127 Poitiers at an unknown location

Like “Boxhill” technically “Poitiers” is a little early for the layout, but the chance of an RTR LBSCR locomotive in Goods Green was too hard to pass up. Poitiers is likely it was based at New Cross in 1911 and plausibly could show up on Brighton Trafalgar on a trip working.

H1 No. 38

H1 Class No. 38 at South Croydon

It is my intention to re-number the Bachmann No. 39 “La France” to the more typical No. 38.

H2 No. 424

H2 Class No. 424 at Brighton

Though appropriate for the era, I would like to rename Bachmman No. 422 to 424 to reflect the locomotive built nearby at the Bluebell, and a nicely remembered holiday at Beachy Head.

LNWR No. 1674 “Lucknow”

The Improved Precedent-class was very much a thing of the past by 1911, but with my Sunny South Special being a reduced train compared to its real life companion, I feel this is a plausible enough substition. And, much like the availability of Poitiers in goods green, it’s not often you get a reasonably plausible pre-grouping RTR locomotive!
